Marcelino Stuhmer earned his MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2000. He has done residencies at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, was a guest artist at Cittadellarte-Pistoletto Foundation in Biella, Italy and did a residency at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam where he received a two-year research fellowship. Stuhmer's work has been exhibited internationally, including solo exhibitions at Optica Center for Contemporary Art in Montreal, Essl Museum of the Present in Vienna and group exhibitions at the Gemeentemuseum in The Hague, Art in General In New York City, and Jeune Creation 2009 in Paris. Solo projects include "Little Triggers" in the Playstation at Galerie Fons Welters in Amsterdam, "Transmission of Conflict" at Galerie Kusseneers in Antwerp, "The Recurring Dream" at the Chicago Cultural Center, and "Get Ready to Shoot Yourself" at Jade Art Gallery, in Bergamo, Italy.

Stuhmer's recent installation work strives to integrate the intellectual and perceptual oscillations between perception and hallucination, and between interpretation and experience, where the viewer “enters into the work” and occupies a different parallel space, narrative, and time. The spatial/architectural structures designed for two recent installation projects, Get Ready to Shoot Yourself (2009), and The Recurring Dream (2008), deconstruct the "cinema house" into 1) an amusement park mirror maze, and 2) a panoramic painting rotunda. Get Ready to Shoot Yourself, shown at the Jade Art Gallery in Bergamo, Italy, was organized by Sara Mazzocchi, Cinema Curator from the GAMeC museum in Bergamo. This installation references the ambiguity of space and time as it is depicted in the final dramatic shootout in a hall of mirrors in OrsonWelles’s 1947 film, The Lady From Shanghai. The complex structure consists of a network of paintings, mirrored surfaces, video, and empty frames that make direct architectural reference to a traditional mirror maze and pulls the viewer into a dislocating, perceptive experience. Unlike in the cinema house, where the images move and the viewer remains still, here the viewer moves through the space, and enters an illusory representation of cinematic space and time. The panoramic painting installation The Recurring Dream depicts the surreal dream sequence from The Manchurian Candidate (1962), where the camera pans 360º around the room, transforming a women’s greenhouse garden lecture into a brutal communist display of mind-control in an anatomy-style theater. The work conveys an industrial, masculine, perhaps threatening presence from the outside, but when viewers enter the space a group of harmless older women looks towards them, implicating and inviting the viewer into the space. The tonal range of colors makes the work an intense sensory experience. While the technical range of processes employed, and the editing/overlapping of images create reference to the enormous perceptual changes that took place between the pre-cinematic era through to the digital video, and virtual space of the post-cinematic.

Stuhmer's work has been featured in Art Forum International,   NRC Handlesblad in The Netherlands, De Volskrant, Amsterdam, Zone 03 in Antwerp, The Chicago Tribune, Chicago Reader, New City Chicago, Milwuakee Journal Sentinal, and others.
