The source material of the work consists of an archive of images from personal photographs, popular culture and news media that deal specifically with the forming of collective memory of historic and current social and political events. Yet to make the paintings, I intentionally use a wet-in-wet painting process that is more prone to accident than description. The technique acts as a subjective filter that refers to the digitization and transmission of images, recording the imaginary moment when an image is either in the process of being remembered or forgotten. The results fluctuate between abstraction and figuration, intimacy and distance, familiarity and alienation, and the real and the imagined. This body of work was made at the Atlantic Center for the Arts in New Smyrna Beach, Florida. I had the opportunity of working with the amazing Argentinean artist Guillermo Kuitca, who was the Artist in Residence.
